What is Freeride?

The MSEF Freeride skiing program is designed to focus on the training and development of athletes aged 12 to 19 seeking to compete in big mountain freeride skiing.


Prospective participants are expected to be able to ski EVERYTHING at Snowbowl safely and confidently.


We strive to offer quality training for athletes to become life-long skiers, offer competitive opportunities, and grow them into strong community role models.


Trainings will focus on alpine skiing drills and techniques, off-piste skiing, air awareness, and backcountry skiing/avalanche safety.


This program is limited to 60 athletes.

Are Competitions required?

Comps are NOT required.


All freeride athletes are highly encouraged to compete but is not required to be a part of the program. 


Prior to registering for IFSA comps please consult with the Head Freeride coach.  All IFSA sanctioned competitions require an IFSA membership; information for membership can be found here

  • Program Requirements

    Registration in Freeride requires at least one year of particiation in our Devo Team (or equivalent program/experience). 


    Athletes who are new to the program will receive an assessment at the beginning of the season to determine if they are able to be a part of the program. 

  • Program Dates and Days

    December 27, 28, and 29 - Holiday Camp


    Saturday, January 4th - First day of programs


    All programs run on Saturdays from January 4th until March 8th. 

  • Program Details

    Athletes should expect to set seasonal goals based on the IFSA (International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association) competition judging criteria of proper technique, control, line choice, fluidity, and style. 


    Trainings will focus on alpine skiing drills and techniques, off-piste skiing, air awareness, and backcountry skiing/avalanche safety.

  • Costs

    Program: $668


    A $200 Fundraising fee will be charged per family.  This fee can be refunded back to you by finding a sponsor willing to donate $500 to MSEF through our Banner Sponsorship Program. 


    Program fees do not cover competition/membership fees, lift tickets, lodging, and transportation costs related to competitions, and specific Camps. 

  • Equipment Needed

    Required:

    Skis (All-terrain/Big-mountain)

    Bindings (w/ adjustable DIN settings)

    Boots

    Helmet (MIPS certified)

    Back Protector (*Required for IFSA comps)


    Recommended: 

    Avalanche Transceiver

    Probe and Shovel

    Backpack


    Encouraged:

    Additional protective gear (hip, knee, elbow pads, chest protector, mouth guard)

  • Additional Programs

    When the snow pack permits, we will try to offer camps at other mountains to give those interested the ability to ski other venues at the beginning of the season. 


    Night Training is also available to Freeride athletes interested in honing their technical skills.
